Call Our Hands - French Kicks - Young Lawyer (CD, Album)

Stumpf--along with his bassist brother Lawrence and FK guitarist-vocalists Matt Stinchcomb and Josh Wise--lived all over the East Coast during the band's formative years, and he considers home just a stop on the map, rather than a hip hangout.

This rover mentality noticeably infects the Kicks' music. The jarring, chopped funk that supports the soaring harmonies makes one ask, "So what are French Kicks? A punk-rock band or a pop band? And with the local rock-label scene currently low on gas--DIY is great, but sometimes it is nice to have someone else put out your crap--numerous Stumptown bands have had to stump their records through other, more distant outlets.

The label had also previously released a 7-inch from King Louie's one-man band. A bit closer to home, Flying Bomb Records , a small but sassy punk-'n'-roll label from the Detroit area, is shooting out a 7-inch from The Hunches , with the band's debut album planned by Burbank's In the Red Records.

Hell, that's the reason most creatively unambitious rockers learned to play "Stairway" on that pawn shop Ibanez in the first place. But backstage lotharios probably never stop to think that their supposed conquests might spread nasty rumors about the, shall we say, qualities of their love.

We do! However, online rawk zine Metal Sludge has no such moral code--it features a list called "The Long and Short of It," in which famous rockahs are "critiqued" by gossipy groupies.

Yes, it is as bad and tacky as it sounds. Following Waves. Was It a Crime. The Falls. Oh Fine. One More Time. Sex Tourists. Sunday Night Is Fair. Where We Went Off. Hey I Wait I. Basement: D. No Mean Time. Keep It Amazed. Knee High.

Drinking Hanging Out In Love. Introspection Late Night Partying. Rainy Day Relaxation Road Trip. Romantic Evening Sex All Themes. Features Interviews Lists. All Our Weekends. Also Ran. Better Time.

Call Our Hands. Carried Away. Close To Modern. Crying Just For Show. Don't Thank Me. Down Now. Following Waves. Go On. Only So Long. Over the World. Right in Time. Said So What. Sex Tourists.

So Far We Are. So Many Cakes. Sunday Night Is Fair. Take in Water. The Trial of the Century.

I mean, I'm one of those people who really get into music. It's NOT JUST music, it's fucking emotion to me. This CD is a rollercoaster ride from one end of the spectrum to the other with very little warning of gradual-ness. It almost sounds as if this is a band whose sound is in transition and in High Society's.

French Kicks Young Lawyer: Rated: French Kicks most aggressive record. The danceable Post-Punk assault of "Young Lawyer" gets relieved only temporarily before the salvo of drums and keyboard at the climax of "Living Room Is Empty," the song that The Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser has sung live with them before, and cites as his favorite French Kicks song.

French Kicks "Young Lawyer"-Star Time Records - Though I can’t put my finger on why, the French Kicks remind me of Pulp, Supergrass or even Blur (meant as a compliment). Their songs start off simply enough but then veer into odd, artsy tangents without sounding pretentious or forced. The French Kicks are on to something great.
