But Howard is at his peak here. Another issue is the song selection -- "Florence of Arabia"? Probably copyright issues, and he needed filler to fulfill a recording contract. Great playing, but the cheese factor is strong with this one. Granted, it's light jazz, but it still swings like mad. There's nothing abrasive here.
It's all very accessible and easy to listen to. It's music to get happy with for sure. The tunes are all concise and to the point. Narry a wasted note anywhere.
And the musicians are clearly enjoying the hell out of what they're playing, too. Howard Roberts' virtuosity is astounding and I can't imagine a more complimentary group of side men to accompany him. Berghoffer, bass, and Palmer, drums are rock solid, steady and tasteful. The organists, Bryant and Kendrix, while different in style, mesh beautifully with Roberts' concept.
The cd itself is first rate. Several session photos not included in the original packages are included as are track times, recording dates, all original liner notes, photos and new liner notes by Jim Carlson. The music was remastered in stereo and the sound quality is excellent for both albums, although you will want to turn the volume up some when H. Although both albums are excellent, my preference is H.
To me, the sign of a great album is how many times you want to listen to it. I used to play H. And now with the stereo cd, I'm discovering it all over again.
So, if you want something to get you happy, it doesn't get any better than this two-fer. As a child of the 60s and 70s and an avid record buyer, I had heard of HR but didn't know much about him.
HR is a sweet guitar player. Third and final album for Reprise, and he sounds completely worn out on cuts like "Mockinbird Lane" - two songs aren't even sung, merely declaimed "Prophet Of Peace". The song material is just as tired; even the better efforts - "When The Saints Come Marchin' In" - are nothing to cross the street for. Adding insult to injury, the disc is padded out with instrumental "Sanctified Satisfied Toetapper" and near-instrumental "Nuki Suki" jams.
He was in much better form this year when he contributed two tracks to the Dollars soundtrack: "Money Is" is lots of fun including an unexpected quote from " I Was Made To Love Her " ; "Do It - To It" is ordinary but at least has some hyperactive bongos.
DBW Southern Child rec. I don't know what motivated the genre switch but it doesn't sound like a whim: He wrote or co-wrote everything, and fully embraces the idiom: there's hardly any piano or brass, and lots of slide guitar via Sneaky Pete Kleinow. Some of the tunes are less inspired "I Git A Little Lonely," which relies heavily on the lyric " I got it bad and that ain't good " , though, and the concluding vamp "Puppy Dogs" is endless.
Although Ray Charles would achieve country crossover success a decade later, I doubt this record would have done the same for Richard - on the other hand, it could hardly have done worse than Second Coming. DBW Right Now! With 20 cuts it's a decent value at least in terms of quantity. As you'd expect, an album followed: Little Richard's first thorough attempt to blend his religious preaching with his piano-pounding rock 'n' rolling.
But there's so much else going on in the mix - blaring sax, pounding piano, Richard's raucous vocals - it's not overwhelming. The domain name DecorFair. Other musical groups picked up on the rhythms and vocal style developed by James Brown and his band, and the funk style began to grow. Dyke and the Blazers , based in Phoenix, Arizona , released " Funky Broadway " in , perhaps the first record of the soul music era to have the word "funky" in the title. In Jimmy McGriff released Electric Funk , featuring his distinctive organ over a blazing horn section. Their debut album East Bay Grease , released , is considered an important milestone in funk.
Throughout the s, TOP had many hits, and the band helped to make funk music a successful genre, with a broader audience. Notably, these afforded the group and the genre crossover success and greater recognition, yet such success escaped comparatively talented and moderately popular funk band peers.
The Temptations , who had previously helped to define the "Motown Sound" — a distinct blend of pop-soul — adopted this new psychedelic sound towards the end of the s as well. A new group of musicians began to further develop the "funk rock" approach.
Innovations were prominently made by George Clinton , with his bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Together, they produced a new kind of funk sound heavily influenced by jazz and psychedelic rock. The two groups shared members and are often referred to collectively as "Parliament-Funkadelic. Clinton played a principal role in several other bands, including Parlet , the Horny Horns, and the Brides of Funkenstein, all part of the P-Funk conglomerate.
The s were the era of highest mainstream visibility for funk music. Disco music owed a great deal to funk. Many early disco songs and performers came directly from funk-oriented backgrounds. In , Rose Royce scored a number-one hit with a purely dance-funk record, " Car Wash ". Even with the arrival of disco, funk became increasingly popular well into the early s.
Funk music was also exported to Africa, and it melded with African singing and rhythms to form Afrobeat. Nigerian musician Fela Kuti , who was heavily influenced by James Brown's music, is credited with creating the style and terming it "Afrobeat". Jazz-funk is a subgenre of jazz music characterized by a strong back beat groove , electrified sounds and an early prevalence of analog synthesizers.
Similar genres include soul jazz and jazz fusion , but neither entirely overlap with jazz-funk. In the s, at the same time that jazz musicians began to explore blending jazz with rock to create jazz fusion , major jazz performers began to experiment with funk. Jazz-funk recordings typically used electric bass and electric piano in the rhythm section, in place of the double bass and acoustic piano that were typically used in jazz up till that point. Pianist and bandleader Herbie Hancock was the first of many big jazz artists who embraced funk during the decade.
Hancock's Headhunters band played the jazz-funk style. The Headhunters' lineup and instrumentation, retaining only wind player Bennie Maupin from Hancock's previous sextet, reflected his new musical direction. He used percussionist Bill Summers in addition to a drummer. On the Corner was jazz trumpeter-composer Miles Davis 's seminal foray into jazz-funk. Like his previous works though, On the Corner was experimental. Davis stated that On the Corner was an attempt at reconnecting with the young black audience which had largely forsaken jazz for rock and funk.
While there is a discernible funk influence in the timbres of the instruments employed, other tonal and rhythmic textures, such as the Indian tambora and tablas, and Cuban congas and bongos, create a multi-layered soundscape. Both sides of the record featured heavy funk drum and bass grooves, with the melodic parts snipped from hours of jams and mixed in the studio.
Also cited as musical influences on the album by Davis were the contemporary composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. In the s, largely as a reaction against what was seen as the over-indulgence of disco , many of the core elements that formed the foundation of the P-Funk formula began to be usurped by electronic instruments , drum machines and synthesizers.
Horn sections of saxophones and trumpets were replaced by synth keyboards , and the horns that remained were given simplified lines, and few horn solos were given to soloists. Electronic drum machines such as the Roland TR , Linn LM-1 , and Oberheim DMX began to replace the " funky drummers " of the past, and the slap and pop style of bass playing were often replaced by synth keyboard basslines.
Lyrics of funk songs began to change from suggestive double entendres to more graphic and sexually explicit content. Rick James was the first funk musician of the s to assume the funk mantle dominated by P-Funk in the s. His album Street Songs , with the singles "Give It to Me Baby" and " Super Freak ", resulted in James becoming a star, and paved the way for the future direction of explicitness in funk.
Beginning in the late s, Prince used a stripped-down, dynamic instrumentation similar to James. However, Prince went on to have as much of an impact on the sound of funk as any one artist since Brown; he combined eroticism, technology, an increasing musical complexity, and an outrageous image and stage show to ultimately create music as ambitious and imaginative as P-Funk. Eventually, the band went on to define their own style of stripped-down funk based on tight musicianship and sexual themes.
Similar to Prince, other bands emerged during the P-Funk era and began to incorporate uninhibited sexuality, dance-oriented themes, synthesizers and other electronic technologies to continue to craft funk hits.
By the latter half of the s, pure funk had lost its commercial impact; however, pop artists from Michael Jackson to Duran Duran often used funk beats. Influenced by Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk , the American musician Afrika Bambaataa developed electro-funk, a minimalist machine-driven style of funk with his single " Planet Rock " in Also known simply as electro, this style of funk was driven by synthesizers and the electronic rhythm of the TR drum machine.
The single " Renegades of Funk " followed in Artists like Steve Arrington and Cameo still received major airplay and had huge global followings. Rock bands began copying elements of funk to their sound, creating new combinations of " funk rock " and " funk metal ".
These bands later inspired the underground mids funkcore movement and current funk-inspired artists like Outkast , Malina Moye , Van Hunt , and Gnarls Barkley. However, they never came close to reaching the commercial success of funk in its heyday, with the exception of Jamiroquai whose album Travelling Without Moving sold about Meanwhile, in Australia and New Zealand, bands playing the pub circuit, such as Supergroove , Skunkhour and the Truth , preserved a more instrumental form of funk.
Since the late s hip hop artists have regularly sampled old funk tunes. James Brown is said to be the most sampled artist in the history of hip hop, while P-Funk is the second most sampled artist; samples of old Parliament and Funkadelic songs formed the basis of West Coast G-funk.
Original beats that feature funk-styled bass or rhythm guitar riffs are also not uncommon. Dre considered the progenitor of the G-funk genre has freely acknowledged to being heavily influenced by George Clinton's psychedelic funk: "Back in the 70s that's all people were doing: getting high, wearing Afros , bell-bottoms and listening to Parliament-Funkadelic. That's why I called my album The Chronic and based my music and the concepts like I did: because his shit was a big influence on my music.
Very big". George Clinton branded Digital Underground as " Sons of the P ", as their second full-length release is also titled. A very strong funk album of DU's was their release Future Rhythm. Much of contemporary club dance music, drum and bass in particular has heavily sampled funk drum breaks. Funk is a major element of certain artists identified with the jam band scene of the late s and s. Phish began playing funkier jams in their sets around , and 's The Story of the Ghost was heavily influenced by funk.
Lettuce , a band of Berklee College Of Music graduates, was formed in the late s as a pure-funk emergence was being felt through the jam band scene. Dumpstaphunk builds upon the New Orleans tradition of funk, with their gritty, low-ended grooves and soulful four-part vocals. The Second Coming was Little Richard's third album for Reprise Records, and saw him reunited with Robert "Bumps" Blackwell from his Specialty days, with them co-writing the majority of the album together.
The concept was to unite the best rock studio musicians of the '50s with the best rock studio musicians of the '70s. Many fans were disappointed in the material and in the over-syncopated, over-produced tracks. The album again failed to chart. God Is Real. The Rill Thing. The Rill Thing was Little Richard's comeback album after a three-year hiatus on new albums.
Utilizing yet another new sound, the album contained Little Richard's biggest post-Specialty single in "Freedom Blues", which broke the Billboard top 50, and a lesser success with the follow-up single, "Greenwood, Mississippi", which made the top ; although the tune made number 56 on Cashbox Black Singles.
The title track itself was a ten-minute plus instrumental penned by Richard. Despite the success of the two tracks as singles and the inclusion of two cover versions, the album itself failed to chart. The Explosive Little Richard. The songs reflect the then-popular soul and Motown musical styles; no tracks were written by Richard.Tracklist: 12th Street Rag Charmaine Carry Me Back Spanish Eyes Somebody Stole My Gal Du är den ende Dinah La vie en rose Creole Jazz Danny Boy Muskrat Ramble St. Louis Blues Audio Fidelity presents a journey into the music of the 60s with the.

Play track. Love this track. In Pulp the nerdy kids had a hero, Jarvis Cocker. Cocker a literary and gawky frontman became a sex symbol, famous for peddling a mix of disco and cheesy 80s synth sound with a sideline in frankly pervy lyrics. It is perhaps more clear now than it was at the time that he would define a generation. That generation being the Britpop era.
It would have been Track 2 on Side 2. This is a gorgeous, expansive album that is much under rated. After about ten years the wilderness, Pulp emerged with this tale of teenage tea time obsession. But in the end I went with this and forgive me if I leave out the.
Lyrically its amongst the best and claustrophobic that Jarvis ever wrote and the way its bursts into the chorus is virtually theatrical. Unusually for a Pulp track, the keyboard sound of Candida Doyle is hardly there on this song and is replaced by guitars. How many of us can identify with this. But back to Prick. A huge part of what makes my favourite songs on it work is how clearly the music lines up with the emotional thrust of the lyrics, which themselves are an odd mix of naked emotion and almost coded personal reference.
One of the things that has aged exceptionally poorly from the mid-nineties has been just how gosh darn seriously a lot of the pseudo-mainstream industrial took itself.
Like, I feel like everything I say is kinda facile, especially when you obviously have spent a ton of time thinking about this LP for like twenty years. I think the big takeaway I can offer from this whole exercise is that this album is a lot funner and has a lot more style than plenty of the albums it gets lumped in with.
It became a self fulfilling prophecy. These days it feels like I learned a lesson. I believed I did need these things for a while. Trent has very publicly battled with depression for much of his life. Part of it self-inflicted, an almost psychosomatic repercussion from his constant portrayal as the ever-morose, cocaine and bondage version of Depeche Mode. His voice still shows scars of this. But really, all these goths go to bed dreaming of cuddly-wuddly bunny wabbits, rainbows and chocolate.
He certainly does following his creation of new album Year Zero. Well… maybe he still does groupies. I would. Unfortunately, after some searching I was unable to pull up a great interview I'd read a couple years back regarding his drug use and music. And on a different note, provides a great history on Nine Inch Nail's discology.
Did someone extrapolate to this conclusion or is it actually mentioned somewhere by Reznor? I've seen mention of isolation from people, and panic attacks before performances but not specifically social anxiety disorder.
Is there any definitive information on Trent Reznor's religous beliefs? Where his music is largely critical of organized religion, has he ever explicitly stated that he is an atheist, agnostic, or a practicing theist of some sort?
I just don't understand how people can blindly believe a bunch of the shit they're fed, to believe it so that they don't think too hard about other issues. That can reach the definition of weak atheism.
Did he date Tori Amos? I heard her song "Caught A Lite Sneeze" was about him? Thanks in advance. Trent sang backup vocals on Tori's song "Past the Mission", recorded in , released , that whole year there was speculation they were a couple.
Her reference to Pretty Hate Machine in "Caught a Lite Sneeze", she has said, was an improve, and she meant it as a reference to when she was driving around listening to really heavy rock music as a single woman in L. At that time , she was in dire straits, having just ended a long relationship with Eric Rosse. But Trent and her have been mutual respectors from the beginning. My first soundtrack post will be dedicated to the avantgarde movie Holy Mountain by the great Alejandro Jodorowsky, his third full length movie and in my opinion his best, although El Topo is very good to. The movie just plain weird, its about this christ-ish figure joining up with a alchemist that can make gold out of shit!
With him and seven other people, each representing a planet, they plan to take the holy mountain from the gods, so they can be immortal. In between all this there are more crazy stuff going on. After the tour, the mothers meet with Gary, frustrated yet again at their sons receiving less money than expected. It comes to a head at a show in Oakland, California. While enjoying the whole spotlight to himself while singing lead vocals for "Mr. Telephone Man," the remaining four initially felt annoyed over Bobby selfishly trying to hog the entire onstage spotlight to himself.
Since Bobby does not get his way in the group, he tosses his mic in the air before storming off the set. Despite their initial reluctance to kick him out, thinking about Bobby's arrest, severe drug usage, continual selfishness, and disrespect eventually prompts the four to unanimously vote Bobby out instead.
While driving with Jeff one of the group's security guards that Gary had hired , Mike speculates on what if any future the group has without Bobby. Jeff makes a suggestion that Mike should consider getting in the business side of the industry, given how few broke executives there are compared to broke musicians, as well as giving him more control. Mike storms into Jheryl's office, interrupting a meeting to demand an explanation.
In other words, rather than just being a manager who could use his connections to get the group a deal with MCA as Gary had indicated to the mothers and the members of the group , Gary had drafted a contract that gave him two things: ownership and control of New Edition. This ensured that he got his money before the group did, as well as allowing him to do things like negotiating a shoe deal without consulting the members of the group.
Jheryl finally ends the meeting with a response, saying, "Welcome to the music business. His mom enters his room to tell him that he has a visitor: Jheryl. He feels Bobby has too much talent to waste his life to drugs and offers him a solo deal with MCA, where he eventually records his debut solo album.
Having moved in together, Ralph's girlfriend encourages him to similarly go solo. Ralph insists that while he is happy with the group, he does start to record some solo tracks without telling the rest of the group beforehand. When Ralph plays some of the solo songs for Ricky, Mike, and Ronnie, they feel betrayed.
They are not very supportive even when Ralph says he would still be part of the group and just do the solo stuff as a side project, which results in Ralph feeling isolated and frustrated.
When Ronnie expresses concern about how he'd take care of his family without New Edition, Mike starts working on a plan, so that they aren't dependent on Ralph. Meanwhile, Ralph, looking forward to solo money rather than splitting with other members of New Edition, shares his feelings with Jheryl. He stresses the importance of two things: timing and positioning, which is why Ralph's solo album will come out later after New Edition records another album.
Ralph - who is known for always being on time and ready to go - travels separately and arrives late. Angered that he wasn't even consulted about the decision and upset over having to split money five ways again, Ralph storms off. Still sulking, Ralph can't help but be impressed by Johnny's voice if not his cowboy boot fashion sense. After a recording session, the two have a private conversation because the other three guys didn't bother to hang around for the session , with Ralph apologizing for his initial conduct.
He was admitting that the situation was more about his relationship with the other guys than anything Johnny had done. Ralph and Johnny realize they have several things in common, including professionalism and being fed the same story by Jheryl about delaying a solo project until after recording a New Edition album.
Now that Ralph and Johnny were cool, Ralph jokingly asked if wannabe executive Mike sold Johnny on being the next Bobby.
Johnny honestly replied that Mike described it as being the next Ralph. Slightly jarred by the thought of being replaced, Ralph regains his normal focus and dedication, with the entire group contributing to a great performance of " Can You Stand The Rain " and work well together recording the rest of the album.
While preparing for Heart Break's album cover photo shoot, the men discuss how they've grown personally and professionally in their years in the recording business. When the photographer encourages them to smile, the group insists they know what works best for them and opts for a more serious facial expression. Duane Martin drops the bombshell that Bobby will be touring with them. New Edition continues their preparations for the upcoming tour by releasing their new single " If It Isn't Love.
Brown's barber DC Young Fly is distracted by the girls that will appear in the video and accidentally cuts off a chunk of Bobby's hair. This left a slant in Bobby's hair that Bobby irately compares to " Gumby. Bobby and New Edition are generally able to work well together on the tour, which also features singer Al B.

Today's obscure 80's hair band is King Kobra From Rockdetector: A band that in their heyday sported a typical Los Angeles Glam look, all members having bleached hair except odd man out Carmine Appice who opted for red and black, KING KOBRA's recorded output showed a remarkable maturity and depth in both the musicianship and songwriting departments.
The original intention was to put a touring line-up of D. The D. Upon the drummer's abrupt mid-tour ousting from Ozzy's band he contacted Free again.
Mick Sweda to team him up with fellow axeman David Michael Phillips a. David Henzerling. The role of bassist came down to two candidates in the auditions, Johnny Rod and Gary Moon. It would be Rod, a native of St. All these musicians had been found through advertisements placed in 'Musicians wanted' ads specifically requesting top class, blonde players to join the peroxide Free and thus contrast Appice's black and red mane. Hooking up with ex-Aucoin employee Alan Miller, who took on the role of manager, the band gained a two album recording deal with Capitol Records.
The second album, 's 'Thrill Of A Lifetime', mystified many fans impressed by the debut. In fact the album failed to gain a British release, FM Revolver picking up on the album for British release. The video for which depicted the band getting their long locks shorn for 'Military Service', leaving fans aghast at the very thought of a Hard Rock band at the time having anything but leonine manes.
MARK FREE quit before the recording of the band's third album, frustrated by both the lack of a deal, their contract was not being renewed by Capitol, and favouring a different musical direction and would follow other horizons, both musically and sexually, he was eventually to undergo surgery to become a woman, in the future.
And, at this point, the band went through an extremely rocky period, hit by several line-up changes in an attempt to get a third album together.
Bassist Rod had also quit to join W. Lonnie Vincent taking Johnny Rod's place on bass, but the liaison was brief. This band would initially go by the title of TNA 'Travers n' Appice' until just days after this announcement another band was discovered with the same name. These guys were supposed to be a big "supergroup", but were relatively obscure even back in the 80's. The most remarkable thing about them seems to be that they were even more like Spinal Tap than the guys from Spinal Tap were.
Alright, here's a really obscure one for today. The group's first incarnation, in the school conference room, found Nobles joined by San Franciscan vocalist Terry James Young and guitarist Andy Baldwin. Following graduation the band struck out on the live circuit soon building up an enviable reputation.
Kinkade's tenure would last until after which he travelled to Hollywood to become an actor and, eventually, a masseur! Lyrically, they were clever, not relying too much on the normal new wave themes of the time though both "Modern Man" and the aforementioned "Danger Man" do allude to their times.
The centerpiece of the album is two rockin' songs linked together that close the first side of the album, "Opus 10" and "I Want Her," both rather basic in formula but powerful in their delivery and placement on the album. A touchingly endearing album with more heart than you'd expect. Though their self-titled debut album met with little or no national success, the Doctors entered the studio to record their second album, this time with hitmaking producer Jeff Glixman , who had handled many commercial rock artists in recent years, including Kansas.
Strange as it may seem, the Doctors ' '80s outlook and Glixman 's hard rock history created an album as exciting as the Doctors ' debut, though less varied.
Using the first album's "I Want Her" as a jumping-off point, the Doctors rock hard on 2nd Opinion without losing any of their charm or melodicism. Guitarist Jeff Severson 's "Waiting for Roxanne" is an absolute classic right out of the box and should have been the big radio hit that the Doctors were waiting for.
Music, which is generally chosen by the lead surgeon, is played roughly percent of the time in the operating room, according to a new report published in The BMJ.
