By this time, Harris was also making news offstage. There were several court appearances involving drunkenness and violent behaviour before the partnership with Meehan came to an abrupt end in September , when Harris was seriously injured in a car accident involving a vehicle in which he was travelling with the pop starlet Billie Davis.
He later confessed that "The car crash shook me up horribly. I became a physical wreck and turned to the bottle … or rather two bottles of vodka a day.
Six months later he attempted the first of several unsuccessful comebacks, failing to complete a brief appearance at the Edmonton Granada in north London. He subsequently took a variety of manual jobs ranging from bricklayer to hospital porter, getting back on stage occasionally during the summer season in Jersey in the early s.
The tabloid press periodically ran riches-to-rags-stories on Harris, at one point reporting him to be working as a bus conductor in Gloucestershire, and recording a live album in front of a captive audience in Gloucester prison. In the s there was an abortive reunion with Meehan and sporadic tours of Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands.
More recently, Harris had performed with Shadows tribute band the Rapiers and made occasional appearances with groups led by other veterans of s beat music such as the drummers Clem Cattini and Bobby Graham.
Harris's significance as a pioneer of the bass guitar was recognised by Fender, who presented him with a lifetime achievement award in , and by the Burns company, who gave him a special Jet Six instrument. Tony Meehan fulfilled contractual obligations.
Some of the tracks include some singing but, as in the case of their former group, their skills as musicians exceeded their vocal skills. For that reason, the instrumental tracks are the best ones here.
This compilation presents the best of Jet and Tony, separately and together, after they left the Shadows. Nobody knows what they might have achieved without Jet's accident, but even the Shadows found big hits harder to come by after If you enjoy sixties instrumental music whether by the Shadows, the Ventures or anybody else you might enjoy this collection. It's worth five stars anyway but would be even better without the vocals - or with a guest singer to do those.
One person found this helpful. See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. A real gem! If The Shads are your bag then this is a must. The musical history of the six string base played by a man who really knew how to play the thing.
I've just sat listening to this in a radio studio whilst interviewing the Four Most and some of their tales about Jet Harris were unbelievable. Play this through a bass-heavy system and you really can feel the music. Historically there is a lot of material here that followed Jet and Tony leaving the Shadows and before their own brief but great pairing. Of course there are the gems of Diamonds and my own favourite, Scarlett O'Hara. All original recordings and good quality sound.
A real piece of 60s music history. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
Please try again. Great cd, ex shadows underestimated duo a excellent cd. Jet and Tony together pure magic all their hits on one cd couldn't ask for more. Husband loves it, a great album.
One or two good tracks. He should have given the singing a miss. Load more international reviews. This album contains their hits, which are brilliant - half of the Shadows had to come up with something pretty good. However, they have filled the album out with not-so-good stuff. The vocal tracks just don't come up to scratch, but the musicianship on all is undeniably excellent. Tony was a drummer above the usual, and Jet could play a great lead.
Glad I bought it though, in spite of the lesser tracks. The quality is very good. I brought this for the singles track and their flip sides, all of which seem to be on here. Davis was no longer romantically attached but they remained good friends.
He settled with his partner in the Isle of Wight and grew to love the area. Heavy smoking took its toll and when I saw Harris last year he was unable to sing but he could still talk and was still playing excellently. The audience loved the way he had developed into a Victor Meldrew.
In , he received an MBE, which he would proudly show to audiences. You can find our Community Guidelines in full here. Want to discuss real-world problems, be involved in the most engaging discussions and hear from the journalists?
